News 031 Gum Disease and Root Canals Treats to Health

Research reported in a major dental science journal revealed that toxic bacterial waste products enter the bloodstream from infected gums.

(Journal of Periodontology January 2002;73:73-78)

About 30% of middle-aged adults in this country suffer from periodontal (gum) disease. GUM DISEASE and the bacteria involved in the disease process have been linked in earlier research to increased rates of STROKE and cardiovascular disease.
ROOT CANALS pose an additional threat to health.

Normal, healthy teeth are living things. They have nerves, a blood supply, require oxygen and nutrients in order to go on living.

The root canal procedure destroys the major nerve and blood supply.

The dead tooth is now left in the jaw. Bacteria can then begin to grow in the millions of tiny side channels or canals inside the tooth and toxins from these bacteria can enter the body.

Toxins from root canal teeth can slowly POISON the body. This slow poisoning can cause a variety of ailments such as bowel ailments, auto-immune diseases and cancers. Poisoning from any source can also bring on negative emotional problems.

Having healthy gums and teeth is not a merely a cosmetic issue but essential to our overall health.
Solutions:

Good oral hygiene is obviously important. Brush thoroughly and floss regularly. Use natural, nontoxic products for cleaning gums and teeth. Some herbs and essential oils are safely antibacterial and may help significantly.

Avoid common foods that promote dental problems, especially any sugars, sodas and high-carb foods. You might also want to limit grains, which some physicians such as Dr. Mercola find unhealthful.

If you have had or are being told you need a root canal, consult one of the new breed of “biological” dentists who can help advise you on alternatives. These same dentists use safer materials for periodic cleanings and other dental procedures, they avoid use of mercury fillings and they won’t expose you to toxic fluoride treatments.

While a nice smile can be an asset, truly health gums and teeth are an even greater one.

News 30 – Sunlight Actually Prevents Cancer

Insufficient exposure to ultraviolet radiation may be an important risk factor for cancer in Western Europe and North America, according to a new study published in the prominent Cancer journal that directly contradicts official advice about sunlight.

The research examined cancer mortality in the United States. Deaths from a range of cancers of the reproductive and digestive systems were approximately twice as high in New England as in the southwest, despite a diet that varies little between regions.

An examination of 506 regions found a close inverse correlation between cancer mortality and levels of ultraviolet B light. The likeliest mechanism for a protective effect of sunlight is vitamin D, which is synthesized by the body in the presence of ultraviolet B.

The study’s author, Dr William Grant says northern parts of the United States may be dark enough in winter that vitamin D synthesis shuts down completely.

While the study focused on white Americans, the same geographical trend affects black Americans, whose overall cancer rates are significantly higher. Darker skinned people require more sunlight to synthesize vitamin D.

There are 13 malignancies that show this inverse correlation, mostly reproductive and digestive cancers. The strongest inverse correlation is with breast, colon, and ovarian cancer.

Other cancers apparently affected by sunlight include tumors of the bladder, uterus, esophagus, rectum, and stomach.

Cancer March 2002; 94:1867-75

While it’s important not to get too much exposure to sunlight, use of sunblocks and avoidance of sunlight is very dangerous indeed. The chemicals in sunblocks are themselves toxic. The lack of vitamin D production puts us at great risk.

Adjust your diet to restore balance of the omega-6 vs omega-3 essential fatty acids. Fish oils can help greatly in this. The proper balance of fats greatly reduces risk of skin cancers from sun exposure.

Use common sense in dealing with the sun. At the beginning of the season, limit exposure to perhaps 10 to 15 minutes and work up gradually. Utilize clothing and shade in order to avoid actual burning, and exercise caution when going in the sun at midday. Use a good, 100% natural moisturizer where needed. But do get out there and enjoy the sun!

028 – The Five Best and Worst Foods You Can Eat

Around this time of year (March), right after the Academy Awards, you see lists like “The Best and Worst Dressed” in the magazines.

We thought we’d extend this to “The Best and Worst Foods List.”

So, here we go!
The 5 Worst Foods You Can Eat:

1. Doughnuts
2. Soft drinks
3. French fries and most other fried foods
4. Chips
5. Most processed carbohydrates

Why they’re the worst

Doughnuts are not only pure refined carbohydrates with no real nutrients, they are also dangerous nonfoods. Fried in oils that have been damaged by heat, they contain very toxic compounds. The same is true for most fried foods. Furthermore, the oils used to fry these foods are usually unbalanced (lacking the essential omega-3 fatty acids) so you get too much of certain things and not enough of others.

Soft drinks, of course, contain vast amounts of refined sugars or toxic artificial sweeteners and other chemicals.

Chips and fries are virtually empty of nutritive value. They are simple carbs that turn to sugar quickly and adversely affect insulin levels. So also are most cereals, breads, pasta, etc.

Although at times tasty, these “foods” are unfit for human consumption. If included in the diet too often, we eat ourselves sick.
The 5 Best Foods You Can Eat:

1. Balanced dietary oils (quality fish oil, coconut oil, and “Udo’s Perfected Oil Blend”, available at health food stores)
2. Fresh, raw, whole organic sprouts, vegetables and fruits (especially good when juiced)
3. Fermented vegetables (sauerkraut, Asian “kimchee,” etc.)
4. Concentrated “Super Foods” such as chlorella algae, barley grass.
5. Raw organic eggs and grass-fed organic meats if you’re not vegan

All of the above “best” foods should be unrefined, unprocessed and organic. For instance, the coconut oil should not be hydrogenated, heated or solvent-extracted.

Please note that if you consume animal products, you should eat grass-fed, not grain-fed meats. Consume eggs from hens that were fed a widely varied, organic diet.

We don’t mention dairy products in particular because it is almost impossible to get them in a form that has not been severely damaged and made dangerous. Pasteurization, homogenization, antibiotics, grain-feeding — these all render milk products harmful to anyone, including babies.

Note also that the types and quantities of protein that people need vary from person to person. There is no “one diet fits all.” Some people can handle a diet of fruits and vegetables very well; others “crash and burn” on this same diet. Thus, each person should find out what works best and stick with that.

An excellent book that can help you determine what diet will work for you is The Metabolic Typing Diet by William Wolcott.

Fermented foods help restore the proper balance of intestinal flora, produce B-vitamins in the body and leave the body’s iternal pH slightly alkaline, as it should be for optimum health.

We hope you find this information helpful. Let us know your “List of the Best and Worst Foods.” We’d love to hear your views on the subject!

027 – Preservative Warning: Parabens and Breast Cancer

A recent British study detected the presence of preservatives called parabens in human breast tumors. Parabens have been shown to have estrogen-like activity. It is known that estrogen can accelerate the growth of cancerous tumors.

Parabens are the most common preservatives used in cosmetics such as deodorants, face creams, body lotions, make-up, etc., and are even used in nearly all of the so-called “natural” brands.

British researcher Dr. Phillipa Darbre told the BBC:

“Their detection (of parabens) in human breast tumours is of concern since parabens have been shown to be able to mimic the action of the female hormone estrogen,” she said.

“Estrogen can drive the growth of human breast tumours. It would therefore seem especially prudent to consider whether parabens should continue to be used in such a wide range of cosmetics applied to the breast area including deodorants.”

Further research is needed but the current findings suggest that avoidance of parabens may be the wisest policy for consumers as well as spa and salon professionals who work with products containing these chemicals.

Read the labels of your current products and see if they contain such names as “methyl paraben,” “propyl paraben,” or “butyl paraben.” This exercise will reveal to you how widespread is the use of these chemicals.

Ask your spa technician or owner if that spa uses products that contain parabens.

Paraben-free products do exist so informed consumers have the opportunity to replace their existing products. We at Evan’s Garden have never used the parabens. We feel Nature has the answers! More data on our philosophy is available here.

Interestingly, reports in the British media were more detailed than those we’ve seen in the U.S.
