The Tide Against Tide

Mainstream Detergents Pose Health Threats

Exposure to chemicals found in common household cleaners such as mainstream laundry detergents may be culprits in a variety of health problems including skin conditions such as eczema, hormone imbalances that may exacerbate PMS, promote infertility and even cause cancer, mental problems including depression, chemical sensitivities in susceptible individuals, and even “crib death” (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS).

Factory-made detergents normally contain large amounts of nitrogen compounds. These are very good fuel sources for certain creatures, including dust mites and mildew. When used on a baby’s bedding, mites can use the nitrogen in the bedding and moisture from the baby to multiply, possibly causing asthmatic allergic reactions in the baby (not to mention direct allergic reaction to the synthetic chemicals in the detergents!). Furthermore, mildew can grow in this environment. According to researches by chemists Dr. T. James Sprott in New Zealand and Barry A. Richardson in England, mildew can interact with the synthetic PVC commonly used in baby mattresses to produce toxic gases, a likely cause of crib death.

Chemicals called phthalates are often found in detergents and foaming agents. These have been shown to have powerful hormonal effects and may cause infertility and an increased risk of cancer. The hormonal effects may also include a much rougher menstrual period or worsened PMS symptoms, leading women to take more drugs, even birth control pills, to help them cope with their strong symptoms.

Chemical sensitivities are an ever-growing problem in the population. Mainstream medicine has been very slow to acknowledge the existence of “multiple chemical sensitivities” (MCS) but alternative healers and the public are becoming very aware of the situation and seeking answers. Unfortunately, such sensitivities may manifest in a wide variety of apparently disrelated symptoms, both physical and mental (depression, for instance). Patients are typically put on risky mainstream drugs or hazardous anti-depressants while the true causes of their troubles go undiscovered.

There are so many potential hazards using typical household chemicals that we cannot recommend their use by anyone. Alternative, natural products are the only sensible answer in our view.

Our great-grandparents used plain soap and water, vinegar, baking soda and such to do their cleaning. The addition of natural plant oils, minerals and essential oils can safely improve the performance and aesthetics of natural cleaners and make them appealing to modern consumers. There is no need to use toxic chemicals to keep our homes clean and hygienic. For our health, for the safety of our children and the quality of the environment, we encourage our readers to “go natural.”

Good news to our customers-friends! We’ve been able to work out more economical sources for some of our quality raw materials, so we could lower prices on some of our products, some quite substantially. Our natural cleaner, Astonishing! which is loaded with antibacterial and solvent essential oils, is a good example. We reduced its price by over 30%! We were able to reduce its cost and are so happy to give you these savings as well! Check it out here: https://www.evansgarden.com/Household/Household-Cleaners/

The Environment and Your Health

By now almost everyone knows that the condition of the environment can affect health. No one today would choose to live right next door to obvious hazards such as toxic waste dumps or nuclear power plants. Our awareness of these threats comes largely from Hollywood films or media exposees. However, other, even larger environmental situations exist that are either NOT being reported by the mainstream press or which are being distorted or left incomplete. Some of these will affect every human being on earth, and you have the right to know about them and to seek solutions. Here are some situations as reported by alternative press or other sources, along with solutions we are aware of. If you happen to know of other solutions, please share this information with us.

IRAQ: Many tons of spent uranium were used in “bunker-buster” bombs and anti-tank artillary shells against that country in the two Gulf Wars. This is the radiation equivalent of literally thousands of Hiroshima- or Nagasaki-type bombs. For details on the effects of this environmental disaster on our troops and millions of civilians, see this link: http://www.sfbayview.com/081804/Depleteduranium081804.shtml

This is a very tough issue to solve. For people who do not live in the Middle East but who WILL be affected by higher average global radiation levels, the wisest course of action is to do everything possible to live a healthful lifestyle, eat well, minimize toxins and boost the immune system. Survival for those who do live in the Middle East may well depend upon heroic measures that a concerned world may find itself obliged to support, including medical radiation detox programs for those affected, and probable evacuation of large tracts of land pending decontamination procedures.

CLIMATE CHANGE: “Global Warming” has been a hotly debated topic for years. However, most of us know, and have been told, only PART of the story. It turns out that global warming is a misleading term. According to scientist John Hamaker, author of the book “The Survival of Civilization”, global warming is in fact EQUATORIAL warming, combined with COOLING of the higher latitudes (temperate zones and the arctic areas). The results include an increase of hurricanes in the warmer latitudes, droughts in places that do not normally experience them, high winds, strong storms and tornadoes plus very cold snowy winters and flooding in the temperate zones. These changes can dramatically affect world food supplies and economies.

One interesting fact about global warming is that it is not a man-made process at all, according to Hamaker. It’s actually part of a natural process that has taken place in 100,000 year cycles for millions of years. Man’s activities in burning fossil fuels may have speeded up the current cycle a bit but are apparently not the prime cause of the phenomenon (volcanic activity produces vastly more carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse gases” than does Man).

For a good review of what’s happening, see this link: http://www.ibiblio.org/ecolandtech/orgfarm/remineralization/remineralization .selected-writings

Suggested solutions may be found here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/beyond/factsheets/changing8_prog3.shtml http://www.globalideasbank.org/site/bank/idea.php?ideaId=568

The solutions links regarding climate change provide very good reading. We recommend you look them over, then consider working with your neighbors to develop ways and means to grow some of your own food in preparation for a time when food may become less conveniently obtained. Techniques for creating efficient, apartment-scale gardens make food production practical for nearly anyone.

The side-benefits of doing your own agriculture are many: More nutritious food, fewer toxins, improved health and immune function. (There’s also the spritual benefit of re-connecting with Nature, something we in our modern world need to work on.)

There are plenty of challenges to living on Earth in these times, but if we approach these problems with a positive certainty that something CAN be done and apply our ingenuity, we can solve them and make a safer planet for future generations.

Evan

Healthy Fats and Oils Versus Plastic Oils

HEALTHY OILS VS PLASTIC FATS

The traditional sources of dietary fats in the 19th century and earlier were butter, lard, fish, meats and occasionally tropical oils such as coconut. During this era, heart disease and cancer were both extremely rare as compared to today.

Then in 1909, an American firm, Proctor and Gamble, took out a patent that enabled them to easily produce hydrogenated fats from vegetable oils (margarine).

In 1920 an American doctor who imported the new German invention, the electrocardiograph, had a hard time at first finding patients to use it on. Blocked arteries were very rare at that time. However, the use of hydrogenated fats (margarine) was beginning to skyrocket after World War I. By 1930, the doctor had plenty of patients who needed the diagnostic capabilities of his machine.

Heart disease continued to increase as the decades wore on and the traditional diets gave way to “modern” foods based on an entirely different set of fats.

MONEY AND DECEPTION

By the mid-1950’s, a large and well-financed campaign against saturated fats and cholesterol began. Based on questionable (and since disproven) science, this campaign served the interests of very large agri-business firms, makers of corn oil and soy oil, as well as food processors whose “refined” oils (margarine!) have proven to cause cancer, heart disease and other ills.

This campaign to vilify animal fats and tropical oils, supported by enormous funding and intense political lobbying by giant food processors, has continued to this day. The result: a population convinced that corn oil and margarine are health foods and that animal fats or tropical oils such as coconut are evil. All this despite proof in a very large scale study (The Framingham Study) that margarine eaters have a 53% higher death rate from heart disease than those who consume butter!

FATS THAT HEAL, FATS THAT KILL

After reviewing research on fats and oils for some time, this writer is convinced that people’s health in many western countries has been sabotaged by vested interests spreading deliberate, widespread dis-information about fats.

Rather than repeat all this research here, which would take a dozen newsletters to review, we refer you to the following link for an excellent summary, complete with links to sources: http://www.westonaprice.org/know_your_fats/skinny.html

Please read the above – it is extremely eye-opening! You need to know this data.

One of the major targets of the big-business food processors has been butter. Hardly any food has ever been so attacked by industry, media and government. Here are just a few of the dozens of known nutrients found in butter that may go missing from a diet that contains neither this food nor other sources of these nutrients:

True vitamin A or retinol, vitamin D, vitamin K and vitamin E as well as all their naturally occurring cofactors needed to obtain maximum effect. Butter is America’s best source of these important nutrients. In fact, vitamin A is more easily absorbed and utilized from butter than from other sources.

Healthy primitive societies that do not eat butter go to great lengths to obtain other foods high in fat-soluble vitamins-fish, shellfish, fish eggs, organ meats, blubber of sea animals and insects.

The above link is a valuable resource regarding benefits also of the fats found in butter and in the other animal sources I just mentioned. Again, there is a lot to this subject, so we suggest you read the link for the details.

HARMFUL FATS

*All hydrogenated oils
*Soy, corn and safflower oils
*Cottonseed oil
*Canola oil
*All fats heated to very high temperatures in processing or frying

In place of butter, of course, the “politically correct” substitute we are offered is margarine. Here is what margarine does in the body:

The fats from which margarine is made are treated by the 1909 process I spoke of earlier. They are heated in the presence of the elements, nickel and hydrogen, and this process, called hydrogenation, changes the liquid corn or soy oil into a semi-solid form. This chemical transformation creates what are called “trans fats.” These fats now have an unnatural chemical structure that is SIMILAR enough to the real thing to be absorbed and used by the body, but DIFFERENT enough from the real thing to cause havoc in the body.

One thing that happens is that these fake fats can be taken in to the cell wall, which is mostly fat, and cause the chemistry of the cell to malfunction. It’s sort of like replacing half the bricks in your home with blocks of styrofoam. Along comes a stiff wind and your house falls down!

A further danger comes from the “polyunsaturated” oils that the big companies promote to us. These oils are extremely unstable chemically and can oxidize (go rancid) very easily through cooking or even just when eaten. Rancid oils cause extreme damage to DNA and lead to mutation of cells and cancer. Canola oil particularly may cause this damage, yet canola is promoted as a real “breakthrough” oil for health!

HEALTHFUL FATS*

*Oils and fats should not be chemically extracted or messed with and should be organically grown wherever possible.

Based on actual laboratory studies, historical analyses of traditional diets and extensive in-the-field observations, beginning over 70 years ago, of healthy populations, the following fats and oils for thousands of years have been health-promoting :

Animal Source:

Butter
Beef and lamb tallow
Lard
Chicken, goose and duck fat
Fish oils

Plant Source:

Coconut, palm and sesame oils
Cold-pressed olive oil
Cold-pressed flax oil

Populations who eat those fats have historically very low incidences of cancer, heart disease and many, many other ailments.

A healthful diet includes proper fat intake from sources to which our bodies have adapted over a thousand-plus generations. Newfangled, nontraditional fats may be good for corporate bottom lines, but they’re not good for us.

We hope this information is of use to you.

MSG – The FAT-MAKER

One common food additive, MSG, may be largely responsible for the epidemic of obesity in America. So states John Erb, author of the book “The Slow Poisoning of America”.

Erb’s exhaustive review of the scientific literature uncovered hundreds of studies over the past thirty years in which young rats and mice were injected with MSG (monosodium glutamate) with the express purpose of producing obese animals with a predisposition for diabetes. The obese/diabetic rats then serve in various experiments for a variety of purposes.

Rats will not naturally overeat – no way, no how. In order to get rats to overeat for their experiments, scientists use MSG. Once the rats were administered the MSG, they lost that control mechanism whereby they had stopped eating when satisfied. Now they ate and ate out of control. And these now obese rats never shed this new overeating habit.

That science has known about these effects of MSG is indisputable. Why, then, is the population exposed to this terrible chemical as a FOOD ADDITIVE?? You guessed it: $$$ “Studies have shown that people who eat food laced with MSG eat more of it, and faster than food that does not have this additive,” says Erb.

This violation of common decency much less sound food-safety policy is the work of such groups as the Glutamate Association, an industry-lobbying group sponsored by many of the companies that use or produce MSG.

HOW MSG MAKES PEOPLE FAT

In addition to being a “flavor enhancer” that encourages people to eat more, there is another, hidden factor in MSG.

“When ingested by human test subjects MSG directly affects the Pancreas stimulating it to triple its standard output of insulin output. This unnatural amount of insulin finds the sugar in the blood and converts it to fat. A few hours after you eat MSG the excess insulin that the MSG triggers reduces your blood sugar level so much that you become tired and even hungry again. In animal test subjects this excess insulin leads to hyperinsulinemia: the chronic overproduction of insulin. The pancreas becomes so out of control that the body starts producing killer T cells to shut it down. (Destruction of the pancreas then leads to diabetes – ed.) Is it any wonder why diabetes, obesity and lethargy in our youths are at an all time high? Junk foods, processed foods, even cafeteria foods are now laced with large amounts of glutamates,” John Erb reports.

MSG may not be the only cause of obesity in humans, but since it is the chemical of choice used by scientists to create obese subjects in lab experiments, and it is known to make people eat more and to drastically affect insulin, it is likely a very large factor.

MENTAL DYNAMITE

Many of our readers may be familiar with “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome” – a name given to the MSG-induced headaches many people get after eating oriental foods. Chinese restaurants typically lace their recipes with MSG. These headaches are far from benign. It turns out that glutamate also causes brain damage, literally destroying brain cells. According to Erb, “Too much glutamate in the brain overexcites the neurons until they die. Many people who suffer from chronic headaches and migraines can trace their trigger to eating too much MSG.” The respected Dr. Russell L. Blaylock has stated this as well.

According to Dr. Blaylock, MSG and other food additives such as aspartame (NutraSweet) may also cause or worsen symptoms of ADHD or other neurological disorders, leading to the false labeling of children and their subsequent drugging. As the reader can see, the consequences of meddling with our food supply solely for profit are grave.

THE MANY FACES OF MSG

Like many chemicals, MSG is often disguised by companies so we won’t know we’re being exposed to it. For instance, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein and Autolyzed Yeast Extract, are MSG-laden food additives which need not be written on labels with the recognizable letters, “MSG”. These ingredients are added to a huge amount of the foods found in restaurants and supermarkets. Nearly ALL fast-food contains it.

Just today we went to one of our favorite restaurants and asked if MSG or the other ingredients above was in the soup or the salad dressings. The answer was “yes” in every case. We left!

WHAT TO DO?

1. ASK. When you go out, ask the waitress to check if MSG, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein* or Autolyzed Yeast Extract are in any of the foods or what you plan on ordering. If necessary, ask the manager. If these are in use, leave and say why. You can also send an email about this at their websites. If you can’t get a straight answer at the restaurant, leave anyway. If they want your business, let them be forthright.

2. READ LABELS. Look for the above additives, but since there may be many other sneaky ways to add MSG, simply avoid processed foods.

3. GO BACK TO NATURE. Eat fresh, whole, unprocessed foods! No worries about toxic food additives that way! Some suggestions: https://evansgarden.com/wholefoods.html

4. GET EDUCATED. Get books such as “The Slow Poisoning of America” by Erb and “Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills” by Blaylock.

5. SPREAD THE WORD. Tell others about this situation, and recommend the books. Recommend that they sign up for our newsletter since our focus is on health and the true facts.

Low Fat, High Carb Diets Cause Aging, Disease Conventional Wisdom Proven Totally Wrong (Pt 1 of 2)

For years we’ve been bombarded with medical and food company propaganda claiming there to be health benefits in low saturated-fat, high carb diets. We’ve been told that bread, pasta and other grain-based foods are good for us. Fats have been demonized to the point that the word “nonfat” means healthful and fat brings on thoughts of impending death.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Saturated fats and cholesterol are not all evil and carbs, most of them, are in fact the source of most of the diseases associated with “civilization”: diabetes, heart disease, cancer and obesity.

For those interested in the beauty effects of diet, it’s interesting to note that consuming too few fats and too many carbohydrates can cause rapid aging and wrinkling of the skin.

The mechanisms of aging and disease from low- fat, high carb diets are several and rather technical. We’ll merely summarize the data on these here and suggest some practical solutions you can use. In this newsletter we’ll focus on the carbohydrate portion of the issue. Fats will be covered in a future letter.

Carbs, Insulin and Aging

Carbohydrates include three types: sugars, starches and fiber. Sugars and starches can be broken down by the body and used. Fiber is (for humans) essentially indigestible but serves to keep us regular and has other useful functions.

Any time we consume sugars or starches, our body responds by producing some amount of the sugar-controlling hormone called insulin. Insulin helps keep blood sugar levels within safe limits. Insulin also helps the body store the excess energy in blood sugar in the form of fat. This of course has a survival value for people who live in “feast or famine” conditions, where they get a lot of food for a short period of the year and then have to live through the winter with relatively little. Stored fats help them keep going.

This useful factor of stored fats does not apply to civilized peoples who do not face ups and downs in food availability. Yet they consume starchy foods such as grains and many refined sugars. Their blood sugar and insulin levels tend to be elevated. Obesity follows closely the use of starchy and sugary foods in a population. Cutting carb intake thus becomes the easiest way to lose weight and keep it off.

As mentioned above, many diseases are traceable to the action of excess blood sugar and/or excessive insulin production and the reaction of the body to these conditions. A brief list of these diseases includes diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and obesity.

In the case of heart disease, it turns out that sugar in the blood sticks to and damages the proteins that make up the walls of the arteries. This damage then invites the formation of plaques and clogging of the arteries. Blood sugar can also make the blood more prone to stick together and coagulate. Insulin produced in response to the sugar can cause arterial spasms. Combine all three factors – damaged arteries, sticky blood and constricted arteries and you have a recipe for heart attacks!

Excessive blood sugar also causes damage to the major protein that makes up our skin- collagen. The sugar-caused damage leads to wrinkling of the skin as well as the formation of annoying spots.

The list of damage caused by excessive sugar intake and insulin production goes on and on. Suffice it to say that a low carb diet is advisable, and a high carb diet is quite commonly fatal.

What To Do?

This does not mean that one should then go onto a low-carb, high-protein, low-fat diet. Very high protein intake over an extended period can be very toxic to the body. Such diets should be limited to brief periods as part of a well-supervised program. No, for many people, believe it or not, both carbs and proteins should provide the minority of their caloric intake, with certain fats comprising the greater portion of the calories. A surprising statement that we’ll elaborate on in an upcoming issue.

Just one point about fats: The brain is over 50% fat (largely cholesterol). The building-block of the hormones in the body is cholesterol. Cholesterol plays huge roles in the function and health of the body. People who do not get enough of the right kind of fats will become deficient in cholesterol and thus weak, depressed, infertile and prematurely old.

A proper diet for an individual will give him a good quantity of concentrated nutrition without excessively affecting his blood sugar and insulin levels. Whole foods like green vegetables, some proteins and good quality fats will do the trick. Avoid sugars and most common carbs such as pasta, breads, potatoes, corn and so on. We’re researching some good recipe books now to share with you. We’ve located some excellent whole-food sources for you as well. You can see these here: https://www.evansgarden.com/wholefoods.html

Conclusion

These data have been well demonstrated in scientific research. One wonders why low-fat, high- carb diets are still generally promoted by the medical establishment, the FDA and food companies. Of course, a population that follows bad dietary advice represents a sizable revenue source for those people who make their living off sick people. If our medicos, like Chinese physicians, got paid only when their patients are healthy, we would probably hear quite a different message in the media.

Fortunately a few ethical physicians are stepping forward with the truth. See this link for one example: http://www.rosedalemetabolics.com/speech99.asp The above link contains very detailed and specific info on the effects of carbs and insulin on health.

I hope you find this data helpful to you and your family.

To health and happiness!
